Cannabis plants have been on the earth for as long as 12,000 years. The plant has been used medicinally and spiritually for thousands of years. Before it was made illegal, US doctors in the early 1900’s carried a tincture of cannabis in their medicine bags.
In more recent times, we have discovered the endocannabinoid system. Cannabinoid receptors were discovered in the brain in the late 1980’s, with more receptors found shortly after. We now understand that humans and mammals have an endocannabinoid system.
What is the endocannabinoid system?
This system has endocannabinoids, cannabinoid receptors, and enzymes that help break down the endocannabinoids. These receptors, CB1 and CB2, are located throughout our bodies, in our brain and organs, and in our skin. This explains why there are benefits to taking cannabis/hemp products internally, as well as using them topically. Cannabis and hemp work with the endocannabinoid system in our bodies.
The endocannabinoids and their receptors work together as a lock and key system. The receptors are unlocked as cannabis enters our bodies.
Why does this work for so many different conditions?
The main job of cannabis is to restore our bodies to homeostasis. Homeostasis is our bodies being in balance, especially when outside forces are changing. Since we respond to stress physically, if our bodies don’t carry that stress, we will feel better.
We hear mostly about THC and CBD. However, there are many more cannabinoids and other chemical compounds in cannabis. CBN, CBG, CBC, and THCV are other cannabinoids found in cannabis, while THCa and CBDa are raw forms of cannabis and hemp. These convert to THC and CBD when heated or extracted.
Terpenes are the essential oils found in cannabis and other plants. Terpenes give each strain its unique smell. When you pick up the cannabis flower and it smells good to you, that is your nose telling you that is a good strain for your body.
What is the entourage effect?
When the whole plant is used, the cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids and other parts of the plant work together to help our bodies. All of these things working together is called the entourage effect.
Enjoy and Feel Better
Studies also show the benefits of using cannabis as a preventative medicine. Using this plant as a vitamin can help our bodies stay in balance.
